Our Mid Century Modern Farmhouse

We are quickly approaching 1 year of living in our farmhouse and thought it would be fun to see how much our space has changed. We have so much more we plan to do and continue to find inspiration while we save up as much as we can! I swear I have shuffled decor, furniture, plants from room to room so many times but finally think I have things decorated to my liking. The hubs and I are huge fans of the mid century era and have found ways to incorporate our love for mid century modern style in the farmhouse. Some of the rooms have been a challenge to decorate but I have enjoyed thoroughly the process of everything coming together! One of our first renovations we plan to do once the money is saved up is the kitchen! It’s quirky and small but we have learned to make the most of it until that time!

When we first found our house on the market this picture of the living room cracked me up! The furniture was all available to purchase but we obviously didn’t work that detail in to the sell of the home 🙂

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 9.50.07 AMOne of the most frustrating initial elements of this house was painting the horrid gold and red crown molding. This room is gigantic and it took an entire week to not only paint the walls white but had to use 3 coats of white paint over the red and gold molding. What they were thinking I still have yet to understand!?  Once we completed the painting everything else started to come to life.BlueVinyl (7 of 21)It’s crazy how painting a bright color and changing out light fixtures can revamp a room! We love the bright airy feel to this well lit room. He was an incredibly kind man and we are so sad not have him with us anymore. Every time we visited his home we would talk about how much we loved his furniture and how amazing it was that he still had some of the same furniture pieces since his early marriage. After he passed away  we were offered some of his thing by my mother in law… we were beyond honored to accept his legacy of mid century style. Our dining room table was the same table my husband grew up with…we even found his younger brothers initials under neath the table top. We have loved incorporating a piece of our families history into the home and mixing it with modern style. Screen Shot 2016-04-12 at 4.04.05 PMBlueVinyl (13 of 21)I am kind of throw pillow junkie and I never buy a pillow and put it where I think it will go but it all eventually works out. I have found the best luck at Target, TJ max and of course our far away friend IKEA. On a recent treasure hunt for some new duds for the house we ran across an eclectic store in west Nashville called “Weird Things, Cool Stuff” and it was exactly that and were in love! We found our ophelia aka, cow skull, and couldn’t wait to find her place in our home!Screen Shot 2016-04-12 at 4.07.29 PMOur entry way still has some love to be had but it is at the bottom of priorities for now and I am content with it. The most we have changed is giving it a fresh coat of white paint. The color that was on the walls when we moved in was an antique white or as I have called, scotch tape. I can’t tell you how much I loathe this color and having to paint white has only been somewhat satisfying since the entire house was painted scotch tape.Screen Shot 2016-04-12 at 4.15.38 PMOh the kitchen! Our house has a 100 year old history however in the course of that time it has been added on twice. I am happy that there is more house now than existed 100 year ago but boy do I wish I could slap the head of the folks who added on so poorly. The kitchen size is not frustrating as much as what happened sometime in the 50’s when they tried to add some of the current style to it and stuffed as many things into this tiny kitchen as possible. Remember that scotch tape color I was talking about? They went crazy with in the kitchen! They painted the trim, the metal cabinets and the walls because why shouldn’t everything be this horrid color?!Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 9.50.46 AMSo we decided to start with a simple rip as much out mentality as we could. One day we will tear the wall down on the right and extend the kitchen into our current mud room into a beautiful modern farmhouse kitchen but until money we’re just working what we got. We decided to play into the retro metal cabinets and give them some life back and this played to the majority of the inspiration. We took out the upper cabinets which immediately brighten up the room, we threw away the microwave and got rid of the portable dishwasher and moved the fridge around to open up counter top space. We put a fresh coat of white over everything possible, put in a new  light fixture and threw a pop of color on the metal cabinets. We have been super happy with it and it has forced me to live very simply in the kitchen as I don’t have a lot of storage space. For now we have a start and we fall fin love our home every day as we get to incorporate our style. I have never loved living somewhere as much as I do here! There is something so peaceful and beautiful about our land and the light in the house is just what I need on daily basis! I’m eager to show more soon!

Our Farmhouse Life

It’s been a bit since I’ve been here. So much has changed and so many new things consume me and my family. We left our town and went 30 minutes down the road for a new way of life. We wanted a little seclusion and a lot of wonderment to create and grow. I can’t believe we will soon be 1 year into this journey. Words can’t describe how in love we are with our new home that is full of quirks and character. There is a beautiful 100 year old history that we now are a part of and privileged to continue writing it’s story.

I have the great task of homeschooling. It’s terrifying, exhausting and my absolute joy. I am learning so much from each of my kids specific learning styles and allowing them the freedom to explore that process. I have forced myself to listen and learn from them to help guide them more effectively. I have so much still to learn and more trial & errors to make but I love doing life with my family.

blue-vinyl-9While holistic health is still a crucial component to our family it is now just a rhythm of life and my outpouring is on my kids. My hope is to share a window vision of our new way of life through homeschooling, preparing to become rookie farmers, motherhood, our farmhouse renovations and more from our daily ruminations.

Weight Loss

Why I will stop comparing myself to the perfect body

For the past 2 years I have worked as hard as I can to be in the best shape of my life. I have lost 50 lbs and maintained the weight drop while adding muscle tone and cardiovascular endurance and yet I still struggle that it’s not enough. Over the past year I have told myself that there is a certain way I should look, a certain perfect angle picture I am only allowed to post and that ultimately I haven’t reached my goal because I am not thin enough. I recently decided that I would no longer allow this to be my perspective!!

We live in a culture that bombards women with an ideal of what a beautiful figure should look like and as a mom it leaves me feeling that I will never measure up. I’ve had 3 children and bare the marks heavily on my skin, breastfeeding has taken it’s deflating toll and my hips have definitely spread and have no intentions no matter how much weight I lose to get any smaller.

I have been saying I want to lose more weight and while there is nothing wrong with making goals I have realized that over the past few months my desire to attain this has come from an insecurity from comparing myself to an ideal of what I’m suppose to be. I want to be beautiful and confident just as I am and not what anyone or anything thinks I should be. For this reason I have declared a makeover and a shift in my way of thinking and will no longer obsess over this ideal because …

I am confident in my imperfect body.

I have a strong body that has experienced child birth 3 times.

I have curves and big muscles in my calves that sometimes makes it hard to buy tall boots but thank God for booties.

I will wear a two piece at the beach and will even do a cart wheel. 

I am a size 10 and feel damn good about it.

I will post pictures that my kids, husband or friends take of me without worrying that I look fat. It’s their perspective of me and I will cherish it.

I will be confident in who I am for my girls so that they can grow up being confident in who they are. 

I have a living, functioning, healthy body, free from disease or chronic illness. I’m far from perfect and I definitely wouldn’t be winning any bikini competitions but I’d rather go enjoy a burger anyway.

I will stop comparing myself to others.

I will be as healthy as I can be for me and for the health of my family.

Every other reason to be skinny can go to hell.

So there. This summer quit trying to live up to an impossible standard. Be healthy as you can be and don’t stress over it all too much!

Ever since I can remember I have struggled with my weight. I love to eat and have spent a great portion of my life addicted to processed, sugary junk food. I was never ashamed to be that girl who ordered the big mac meal and finish my friends left overs.  A normal day for me used to be filled with soda, fast food and anything that came in the form of bread. As long as my stomach was full it didn’t matter what I was consuming.

It’s been 2 years since I made the decision to change my behavior on health. While I did carry and birth 3 children to help add to my weight, my behavior was continuing me on a slippery slope of obesity and sickness. I knew I needed to change but was fearful that my cravings would be too strong to allow me to get healthy. I had lost weight before but had continually gained the weight back with each attempt. My previous goals for weight loss were just to look and be thinner with no thought to wanting my health to improve. My goal for weight loss was solely to be perceived a certain way rather than improving my overall health. Caring for my overall health has been the determining factor of my continued ability to keep weight off and even further new goals.

I have lost 45 pounds, improved symptoms like allergies and seasonal sickness’s, have more athletic stamina, improved my emotional well-being and have more energy as a wife and mom!

I wanted to change my habits so that my quality of life was enhanced. I began to realize that If I didn’t make the decision to change my health that I was welcoming sickness and possibly disease into my future. I want to be in the best shape of my life to enjoy my family and community at its fullest.

I suffered terribly with allergies and wanted to try healing my attacks through my gut. I began by simply cutting processed sugar from my diet. Which may seem easy enough until you begin to realize how much of our food is loaded with it!! After some detoxing (from no sugar) I began consistently consuming whole, clean foods like organic greens and veggies, lean meats, nuts legumes etc… If it came out of a box and I couldn’t pronounce the long list of ingredients, I didn’t put it my mouth.

My allergies were the first to improve which was huge because I was miserable! From there I began to see weight loss and that was even more encouraging! I decided to start exercising through a free online workout program called Fitness Blender, which offers over 300 different types of routines. I loved the idea of not having to compare myself to others in a gym and not feeling the pressure to wear fancy exercise clothing and most of all it was FREE!


If I can lose weight, me with the horrible addiction to fake food, then anyone can and it starts with a GOALl! Make it about optimal health and set a number or achievement you want to see! For me, my goal was to lose 60 pounds! I’m still working towards my goal and I plan on hitting it! Then come up with A PLAN! I cut out sugar and then tried to only eat real, clean foods and I loved it! Finally, COMMIT to it!! Consistency and self-will are key and if you stay consistent you will see results!

I’m a normal o’l gal that loves a cold beer and giant burger loaded with french fries. I decided one day that I’d make a goal to change my health and I’ve committed to daily carrying it out. I have taken it day by day and practiced a whole lot of self control (with a weekly cheat day to help me through) and am still on that journey today to achieve what I have set out to do!

Make goals today and change your quality of life! You will not regret it!

3. Handmade Valentines!! Because how often do you have a good excuse to break out the glitter and sequins to make your main squeeze a card? Sure, they may not appreciate the glitter as much as we do but they definitely appreciate not spending $4.50 on a Hallmark card. 

Speaking of handmade Valentines, we got together and made some cute little cards for our men. Sure we saved ourselves a trip to the greeting card aisle but the real fun was making them! But honestly, anytime we get together it’s a party.

We had a blast grillin dogs, eating cupcakes and tearing apart a piñata! We couldn’t have asked for our day to be any sweeter! Happy Birthday Ada!



Why You Shouldn’t Feel Guilty About Cheating

Listen. I am as normal and real as they come. I am not perfect, I love to have fun and put me in a social gathering and you would never know I am passionate about the things that I am. (i.e. Homebirth, juicing) I love to eat fried food, drink dark beer and don’t even put a burger in front of me because I will do a vanishing magic trick with it. The decision I made to dramatically change my diet 2 year ago has made a huge impact on who I am and how I function but I am not so pious that I don’t know how to cut loose and enjoy life a little. Our culture is what it is and for all it’s worth you do the best you can and not fret over everything. Its crucial to plan to fall off the horse so that you can practice getting back on.

I love love love Dr. Axe, The Food Babe and Dr. Mercola! They are incredible health experts who are living their life exactly as they preach. I have even heard some pretty funny stories about Dr. Axe in restaurants asking pretty much where his food was hatched, raised and treated. He’s all in ya’ll and I respect him like mad!! However, I don’t think I could ever function like that. I live by the 80/20 rule. My desire is that 80% of my health is aligned with eating whole REAL foods that are life giving, disease fighting, helps me maintain healthy weight and fills me with energy to be a mom. I reserve 20% to the days that we all know are going to happen…dinner with friends, cravings for thai food, burgers, more burgers and just plain mess ups. I need to know that I can mess up because it helps me get back on track. Although, I do hope to be more like Dr. Axe one day. I’m just gonna say it, He’s my hero.

I will admit it can be difficult after a week of eating poor choice foods like pizza, fries and chocolate to decide you’ve had enough and start the next day with eating fruit, cottage cheese and veggie soup. But with practice and consistency It can be done and should be done. I call them gut rest. It’s the screeching halt of giving your a body break when you have over indulged and your body is screaming to rest and recoup. I also want to add you can have cheat day with real food like gluten free, organic delicacies, real ice cream made from real ingredients! It doesn’t always means that you eat the worst of the worst but it also means sometimes you may.

Now, I am not advocating that we go out and party like the world is ending. I am trying to communicate that we can’t eat perfect all the time! When I first began this journey I desperately needed someone to tell me that it’s all about a healthy balance with life giving food at the forefront and cheat nights allowed here and there. You fall away from your eating plan for a couple days then you work just as hard to get back on it. That’s life and it’s ok!! We aren’t perfect but we should strive to be as close to it as we can….especially with food. It’s our fuel and it can be the life changing course of disease and sickness or thriving life!

I’ve lost 50 lbs, reversed allergies and rarely get sick because 80% of my diet is consuming with real food, good fats, greens, fruits, nuts, beans and any other food as I tell my kids, that come from the earth. While I was in the brunt of losing weight I still had cheat nights! It happened and they helped me stay consistent. It’s life and we have to maintain balance!

How I Lost 5lbs in 2 Weeks

For the past 2 weeks I have been focusing on eliminating grains and sugar from my diet. Monday- Friday I am strategic in choosing protein, bean, nut and green foods and allowing my favorite hamburgers and dark beers on the weekends. I have felt so great the past 2 weeks that I have no intentions in stopping this new routine. Not only do I feel great but I am noticing my body changing and responding differently to my workout regimen. I purposely have been doing shorter HIIT routines that give me a higher calorie burn to see what results I can gain with this diet. My workouts range anywhere from 15 min being the average or 30 min if I’m really in the mood to add a little extra credit burn and consist of a mix of  tabata, kettlebell, weight training and good o’l plyometrics. I posted last week on some of the foods that I have been eating and the simplicity of consuming real whole foods.

I have lost 5 lbs in the past 2 weeks and noticed that my abs (which have been through a lot in the past 7 years) are becoming more defined, leaner and stronger. It is possible to have a flat belly after birthing 3 kids! Hallelujah!

It will happen through consistency and pushing through. I never thought it was possible until I set out to find it the truth. 50 lbs latter I am living proof that all things are possible with determination, a plan, commitment and desire for change!
