Why You Shouldn’t Feel Guilty About Cheating

Listen. I am as normal and real as they come. I am not perfect, I love to have fun and put me in a social gathering and you would never know I am passionate about the things that I am. (i.e. Homebirth, juicing) I love to eat fried food, drink dark beer and don’t even put a burger in front of me because I will do a vanishing magic trick with it. The decision I made to dramatically change my diet 2 year ago has made a huge impact on who I am and how I function but I am not so pious that I don’t know how to cut loose and enjoy life a little. Our culture is what it is and for all it’s worth you do the best you can and not fret over everything. Its crucial to plan to fall off the horse so that you can practice getting back on.

I love love love Dr. Axe, The Food Babe and Dr. Mercola! They are incredible health experts who are living their life exactly as they preach. I have even heard some pretty funny stories about Dr. Axe in restaurants asking pretty much where his food was hatched, raised and treated. He’s all in ya’ll and I respect him like mad!! However, I don’t think I could ever function like that. I live by the 80/20 rule. My desire is that 80% of my health is aligned with eating whole REAL foods that are life giving, disease fighting, helps me maintain healthy weight and fills me with energy to be a mom. I reserve 20% to the days that we all know are going to happen…dinner with friends, cravings for thai food, burgers, more burgers and just plain mess ups. I need to know that I can mess up because it helps me get back on track. Although, I do hope to be more like Dr. Axe one day. I’m just gonna say it, He’s my hero.

I will admit it can be difficult after a week of eating poor choice foods like pizza, fries and chocolate to decide you’ve had enough and start the next day with eating fruit, cottage cheese and veggie soup. But with practice and consistency It can be done and should be done. I call them gut rest. It’s the screeching halt of giving your a body break when you have over indulged and your body is screaming to rest and recoup. I also want to add you can have cheat day with real food like gluten free, organic delicacies, real ice cream made from real ingredients! It doesn’t always means that you eat the worst of the worst but it also means sometimes you may.

Now, I am not advocating that we go out and party like the world is ending. I am trying to communicate that we can’t eat perfect all the time! When I first began this journey I desperately needed someone to tell me that it’s all about a healthy balance with life giving food at the forefront and cheat nights allowed here and there. You fall away from your eating plan for a couple days then you work just as hard to get back on it. That’s life and it’s ok!! We aren’t perfect but we should strive to be as close to it as we can….especially with food. It’s our fuel and it can be the life changing course of disease and sickness or thriving life!

I’ve lost 50 lbs, reversed allergies and rarely get sick because 80% of my diet is consuming with real food, good fats, greens, fruits, nuts, beans and any other food as I tell my kids, that come from the earth. While I was in the brunt of losing weight I still had cheat nights! It happened and they helped me stay consistent. It’s life and we have to maintain balance!

How I Lost 5lbs in 2 Weeks

For the past 2 weeks I have been focusing on eliminating grains and sugar from my diet. Monday- Friday I am strategic in choosing protein, bean, nut and green foods and allowing my favorite hamburgers and dark beers on the weekends. I have felt so great the past 2 weeks that I have no intentions in stopping this new routine. Not only do I feel great but I am noticing my body changing and responding differently to my workout regimen. I purposely have been doing shorter HIIT routines that give me a higher calorie burn to see what results I can gain with this diet. My workouts range anywhere from 15 min being the average or 30 min if I’m really in the mood to add a little extra credit burn and consist of a mix of  tabata, kettlebell, weight training and good o’l plyometrics. I posted last week on some of the foods that I have been eating and the simplicity of consuming real whole foods.

I have lost 5 lbs in the past 2 weeks and noticed that my abs (which have been through a lot in the past 7 years) are becoming more defined, leaner and stronger. It is possible to have a flat belly after birthing 3 kids! Hallelujah!

3 Ways To Build Muscles

I am so proud of my husband! He has been on this journey of health with me and has taken it upon himself to commit to achieving personal goals. 2 years ago he started with changing his diet by eliminating processed sugary junk and replacing with whole real foods. By changing his diet he lost 20 lbs, gained  incredible amounts of energy and became determined to build strength. He continually educates himself and more importantly he is committed to making workouts a part of his weekly routine.

We aren’t training for a body builder competition or desiring fast results but rather incorporating working out as a lifestyle. Through researching and following trusted health experts like Dr. Axe, Charlie has been following a wonderful plan to build muscle and strength. In just 8 months he has noticed major change in his overall strength and muscle growth.

unnamedMy husband is one the hardest working people I know. Not only is he a full time senior web designer but he also manages our photography business and does freelance on the side. Amongst all those things he is an amazing dad and never lets work come before his family. Finding time for himself has been difficult but we have given grace to each other so that we can purse our personal goals. Since he is so busy he has to find a workout regimen that was realistic for his routine and easy to commit to. After a  lot of trial and error, researching different methods Charlie now has a solid workout structure that he has enjoyed following and achieves weekly.

Here are 3 ways you can begin building muscle weekly:

1) Lifting + HIIT (High Intense Interval Training). You won’t believe this but you can build muscle in just 2-3 days a week! One of the methods that Charlie has learned is that REST is actually extremely important to muscle growth and that the best muscle-building results come from having 3-5 days of training with a few rest days within the mix. Because he’s a busy dad, entrepreneur and web designer his week doesn’t allot time for rigorous time consuming exercise. His results have come from 2 days of superset lifting and the opposite days of HIIT training.

2) Whole Food Superhuman Shake for Strength + Muscle. Every morning Charlie makes his whole food protein powder shake full of wholesome power packed ingredients. There is nothing artificial or processed in this shake making it an amazing whole food breakfast!

Dr. Axe’s Superhuman Shake (Charlie has a dairy allergy so he omits all the dairy)

  • 3 Raw Eggs
  • 1 Scoop Organic Protein Powder (whey or plant-based)
  • 4-8 oz. Coconut Milk or Kefir or yogurt
  • 1 Banana
  • 3 Tablespoons (TBSP) Almond Butter
  • 1 TBSP Flax Meal or Chia Seeds
  • 1 TSP Cinnamon

3) Clean Diet One of the best ways to increase strength and boost vitality is by what you put into your body! We avoid sugars and even grains as much as we can. Charlie struggles with gluten and dairy so we keep protein and phytonutrients at the forefront our diet! Through eating clean, organic and packing in protein and veggies we have noticed a huge change in our overall health.

8 Ways To shop at Kroger For Your Organic Needs Without Breaking The Bank

Like any mom on a budget I get pretty stoked to find good deals on organic foods at grocery stores. I’m pretty loyal to our local Trader Joe’s and Costco but have decided that I would open my circle of trust to our neighborhood Kroger. I make chili a lot because its incredibly cheap, my kids love it and I can use all organic products. I usually do a quick run through at Kroger for their canned organic beans priced at just .99 but since I was shopping solo last week I took my precious time to see what other options Kroger had. I was absolutely floored at some of the new options and specials Kroger offered on their organic select foods. So much so that I grabbed my phone and began snapping photos while I shopped to spread the good news. Here are 8 reason to shop at Kroger for your organic needs without breaking the bank:

 1) Organic Canned Beans!! Always priced at .99 and great for those canned recipes without the added preservatives & additives of conventional canned beans.

2) There are some fruits and veggies that are safe to buy conventional like bananas and avocados. I find that Kroger constantly has good deals on items like avocados which I do not buy organic since its on the lowers side of the pesticide list. Check HERE for the EWG list of the dirty dozen and the Clean 15. I picked up one of my favorite healthy fats at just .99 a piece!

3) Clearance Bins!!! I’m like a kid on Christmas morning when I get to these awesome bins. I almost always find at least 1 or 2 little organic goodies that I normally skip on because of price. We eat Larabars like the world is ending and as parents at a fast paced lifestyle we need healthy grab and go treats ( and yes I could just make my own but c’mon who’s got time for that). We adore larabars because there is literally 4-5 ingredients that are real and easily pronounced making this a seriously awesome whole food. I was super stoked to find 2 large boxes of my favorite flavor of larabars priced at just .89 a bar! These babies normally are around $1.19 per bar and sometimes $1 when they are on sale. I scored BIG and had a week of my favorite snack!

4)  Kids healthy snacks! If you have kids especially in the constant growing and eating stage then your probably buy snacks. Now that our kids go to school it’s impossible to avoid buying snacks to throw in their lunch boxes and I’m always looking for a deal on safe options. Kroger is notorious for their great sales. It’s rare that I walk in and don’t see a sale on their Annie’s snack crackers making this a great reason to shop Kroger for your snacking needs! I was super pumped to find these snack yogurts on sale for $1 a piece too!

5) Organic Meat! I normally always buy my organic meats at Costco because it’s pretty impossible to beat their prices. However, I don’t always have the full amount in my budget to buy the bulk selection and found that Kroger’s organic selection was comparable to TJ’s prices. I love to minimize my shopping trip as much as possible and since I have 3 Krogers less than 15 minutes away from me I find this a great option to purchase.

6) New Organic Products! I was super excited to see all the new organic products Kroger was shelving like a NON- GMO cereals made from a bean blend rather than wheat or enriched flour and popcorn made from pink Himalayan salt (Which if you don’t know the benefits of pink Himalayan salt stay tuned for a blog on it coming soon). While these items weren’t on sale and priced at around $3.99 each I will keep my eye on them because Kroger is great about their sales!

7) Kroger’s Simple Truth Organic Line! I find that the prices of the Kroger’s brand Simple Truth is either comparable to TJ’s, Earth Fare or a little less. Making this an easy one stop option!

8) Last but not least by any means and probably my favorite reason to shop Kroger is……MANGERS SPECIALS!!!! Holy cowabunga these are better than sale prices and pretty much the best deals I have ever seen! Kroger will randomly do managers specials throughout the stores on selected items. It’s literally my favorite tag I have ever seen because the prices are unbelievable! We eat yogurt as much as we can for the beneficial probiotics. The Stoneyfield brand of yogurt is normally priced at $3.50 on sale. I checked Whole foods the day after and their price was closer to $4 so you can imagine my excitement when I scored this tub of yogurt for $1.79!!

Kroger defiantly earned it’s way into my heart and I will most certainly be adding this to my weekly grocery run. IF you haven’t checkout Kroger and discounted it the way I did give it another chance and you may just save BIG on your grocery bill!

Organic Yogurt Chicken Salad

When it comes to my grocery list I’m always stumped on what to do for lunches. I find that If I plan ahead and prepare something that is easy to grab in the fridge I am more likely to eat healthy. This week since Charlie and I have been eating whole clean foods I decided to add a few natural sugars back and make this delicious chicken salad.


Yummy Organic Yogurt Chicken Salad

  • 1lb Cooked Organic chicken breast or tenders (I boil before hand…make its perfectly shreddable)
  • 1/2 c diced red onion
  • 1/2 c diced apples
  • 2/3 c. grapes
  • 1/3 dried cranberries
  • 1/4 c. raw walnuts
  • 1/2 cup organic greek or plain yogurt
  • 1.5 T Lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • salt & Pepper

Boil chicken and shred. Add to bowl with all other ingredients. Mix and put in the fridge. Serve once chilled!

I’m not always successful at being prepared but I am trying to be a better steward of managing my food prep so that I don’t struggle to reach for foods that are not going to help me reach my goals! Pair with an avocado or in a lettuce wrap for a filling nutritious lunch!


I Survived A Week Of Detox Even With Sick Kids!

Had I known that I would be dealing with  respiratory issues and the stomach virus from my kids all week long I may have not been so eager to go sugar and grain free but I’m so glad I did. I have been feeling so much better in my gut! While It did put a damper on blogging I at least continued to document all the beautifully colorful array of dinners. I have never enjoyed eating at home as much I did last week. Cooking is not my strength so by Thursday I was copping a little attitude but since my youngest decided to vomit all over the hubs and I we didn’t really care much to fix dinner. I noticed a major decline in energy mid week and had to really push through a run with my pal Heylee…darn you sugar elimination. Overall, I felt great and finally had a peaceful gut that wasn’t swollen and gassy.

Charlie and I had a few needed cheat meals this weekend and are ready to conquer another week of eating grain and sugar free! Here’s a little look into last week. We are so thankful for our amazing chiropractor Dr. Ronson! When it comes to sickness our adjustment expedite healing in a way I never thought possible!

Crock Pot Salsa chicken Lettuce Wraps: 

1-2 lbs Organic chicken

Your favorite salsa

Organic Lettuce

Add your favorite seasonings! Chili powder, cumin, cayenne

Place chicken in bottom of crock pot, enough salsa to cover and a little extra so the chicken doesn’t dry. HIGH for 4 hours. Boom!

White Chicken Chili


  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cups cooked chicken (I usually use an oven-baked rotisserie chicken from the grocery store to save on time), shredded
  • 2 cans Great Northern Beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can corn, drained
  • 1 can (4 ounces) green chiles
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 box (32 ounces) chicken broth
  • Kosher salt (to taste)
  • Pepper (to taste)
  • 1 lime, juice


  1. In a large pot, saute the onion and cook until it starts to become translucent.
  2. Once the onion is done, add shreds of chicken, Great Northern Beans, corn, green chilies (with juice from can), cumin and oregano to the large pot. Stir to combine all of the ingredients and then add the chicken broth.
  3. Bring to a boil and simmer for 20-30 minutes to allow the broth to reduce. Add salt and pepper (to taste) and juice from one whole lime. (You can add 1/2 cup of chopped cilantro if you desire. I personally don’t like cilantro so I serve it as a side.)
  4. Leave simmering on stove until ready to serve.
  5. Serve with sour cream, chopped cilantro, shredded Pepper Jack cheese, avocado or tortilla chips.



My 5 Day Healing Cleanse: Day 1

FOOD! Oh how I love it. The different flavors, the varieties, the way they pair together…You can defiantly call me a food connoisseur! Up until the last 2 years of my life most of my food choices have been processed, sugary foods that hold close to no nutritional value but are rich in flavor and easy to become addicted to. I never truly understood the health impact of eating fake food besides that it made you gain weight and never did it occur to me that I would have to begin educating myself on how to truly live and eat healthy real food.

Fast forward to present time, a lot has changed for me. I still love food with the same capacity but my understanding and commitment has changed. I haven’t consumed a Whopper burger with an upsized Dr. Pepper (which use to be my favorite) in over 2 years because I realize that I am consuming purely sugar instead of food that brings life to my body. I try to consistently choose foods that are organic, antibiotic, preservative, additive and GMO free. I love green dense phytonutrient live foods like bok choy, spinach and black beans that support our immune system and can help prevent cancer rather than promote them like in my former fast food life.

But at the end of the day, I’m human. I mess up by indulging in my favorite Mexican restaurant, or gluten ful (not free)l pizza. I love red wine, dark beer and whiskey which are full of sugar and often made with preservatives. I find myself at a place where I realize I am stuck in my cravings. For the past month I have let a little too loose and realize that I have made some pretty poor choices. I carry a lot of guilt when I don’t hold strong to my commitments for myself and my family. Our health has become a huge conviction for me and I have realized that I have fallen back in to old habits. I think I will always have conflict and be swayed by my emotions to food but the important factor is that I get back to living and being healthy.

I have been feeling like junk lately. Bloating, gassy…etc you know the way you feel feel when you over indulge in too much sugar, gluten and processed food. I have gained about 3-4 lbs despite exercising 5-6 days a week and I haven’t been sleeping well. I decided it was time for a BIG detox and just like I did 2 years ago the first thing out the door is SUGAR!! Both Charlie and I have begun a detoxing together so we can get back to feeling the way we love!

Everyday this week I will share 1 way to bring healing back to your body when you have over indulged and given in to public enemy number 1…SUGAR! Today we change our FOOD! We are refraining from ANYTHING with sugar and grains. Our focus is to eat a variety of healthy proteins, fermented foods (probiotics) greens, legumes, nuts, organic meats etc! The wonderful thing about detoxing is it doesn’t mean you have to starve yourself! We are eating as much to our hearts content of the foods that bring life and restoration! So what does that look like? I documented every thing we ate yesterday up to packing lunches for today!

2 Delicious Organic Dinners for Under $3 Per Person

Organic living can be expensive and downright frustrating! When you have a family living on a budget organic living can feel impossible. It doesn’t make sense that buying “real” food is outrageously more expensive than the fake, modified chemical version. (a long heavy sigh….)

Thankfully there are ways to live organic on a budget. The key, I have found, is simplicity!! I am not a cook, baker or anything that pertains to that word and don’t enjoy cooking one bit. However, I do enjoy taking care of my family so I have had to buckle down and come up with weekly “real food” options that are cost effective and kid friendly.

We rotate a lot of the same dinners each week because they are easy and the kids like them. One of our main staple ingredients are dry organic black beans! We eat black beans at least twice a week at 1.99 lb at Whole Foods which is about as cheap as we can do it! Thankfully black beans are incredibly nutritious and we mix and match them with quinoa, brown rice or as ingredients in other recipes to keep them fresh for the kiddos.

I almost never leave the grocery without the ingredients for these 2 dishes. I would consider these our staple weekly dinners and at $2.50 per person I am quite happy for these clean food recipes!

1) Organic black bean noodle spaghetti + spinach salad and peas

  • 1 Jar of organic spaghetti sauce (Trader Joes $1.99)
  • Organic Box of black bean noodles  (Costco bulk for $9, only used 2 oz,  $3)
  • 1/2 bag of Organic Peas (Trader Joe’s $1.50)
  • Organic bag of Spinach salad with dried cranberries & goat cheese + T’J’s dressing (all Purchased from T.J’s total paid $9 total for all 3 ingredients but only used a sprinkle of cranberries and goat cheese $5 for this serving)

Total Dinner Cost after tax= $12 (Our family of 5 breaks that down to about $2.40 per person!

Need to make it cheaper? Next best, whole wheat grain noodles. Sub a veggie like broccoli instead of a salad.


2) Organic Sweet & Spicy Chili

  • 1-2 lbs of organic ground beef. We use 1.34 lbs per serving (Costco Bulk $18 for 3 lbs) Which makes our price per serving $6
  • 3 cans of organic chili beans (Kroger .99 per can, $3)
  • 1 can organic tomato sauce (Kroger $1.15)
  • 2-3 Tbs Chili Power
  • Cayenne pepper (to your desire of spiciness)
  • 1/4 Cup honey (start with a little then add till you get the perfect combo of sweet and spice)
  • Salt & Pepper to Taste
  • Optional Cheese and avocado (We try and stay grain free as much as possible and don’t eat chips or bread but if you prefer add $3-4)

Ground your beef in a skillet until browned, combine all ingredients in a slower cooker or stove top. Slow cooker ( 4 hours on high, 6 hours on low) Stove top bring to a boil then simmer chili for 5-10 min.

Total dinner cost after tax and adding a few dollars for the cabinet stables= $12

Need to make it cheaper? Go meatless and add an extra can of beans!


You can always skip on the canned beans and buy bulk organic dried beans with a little more prep in your step to save on cost 😉

Both these dinners are delicious and under 30 min to make! We always have leftover chili and eat for lunch the following day which covers 2 meals saving us even more money!

If eating organic is not an option to your budget I highly recommend becoming familiar with websites like EWG.ORG to learn which fruits and veggies are safest to eat conventional. Look for options like WHOLE GRAIN WHEAT, shop the outer parts of the grocery store for the healthiest foods, (avoid boxed snack options, instead make homemade snacks) buy dried beans in bulk and use pesticide soaks when necessary.


The Most Important Beauty Product To Change Now!!

I know there is nothing worse in the world than body odor! It smells, it can be embarrassing but did you know that your body odor could be reveling something about your health? Most people believe that the body just naturally stinks and that BO is just a result from bacteria growth in your armpits, this is just not true and the body doesn’t just naturally stink. “The fact is, body odor is primarily the toxic gas from the fermentation or putrefaction processes going on inside your body due to the ingestion of animal products and processed, refined foods. So the phrase ” You are what you EAT” is mostly certainly true! So what do most people do to eliminate body order? We find the strongest antiperspirant to block any sweat or smells so that we can live life free of embarrassment. Unfortunately, there are serious consequences to this. Do you truly know and understand what you are rubbing on one of the most delicate areas of your body? Here are a few of the ingredients that are in your conventional deodorant.


“A 2006 study found that aluminum salts can mimic the hormone estrogen, and chemicals that imitate that hormone are known to increase breast cancer risk. Animal studies have also found that aluminum can cause cancer.

Given that antiperspirants are used on your armpits, the aluminum salt concentration is highest near your breast tissue. Further, when women shave under their arms it can result in a higher aluminum-salt absorption rate due to the damaged skin.

In a 2007 study published in the Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry, researchers tested breast samples from 17 breast cancer patients who had undergone mastectomies. The women who used antiperspirants had deposits of aluminum in their outer breast tissue. Concentrations of aluminum were higher in the tissue closest to the underarm than in the central breast.

Aluminum is not normally found in the human body, so this study was a pretty clear sign that the metal was being absorbed from antiperspirant sprays and roll-ons.” (SOURCE)

So what do we do? We don’t want to stink but we don’t want to block important toxins from leaving the body. We certainly don’t want to put neurotoxins under our armpits either. Thankfully, we live in a world where alternative options are becoming mainstream! Even taking a walk through your natural food store aisle like whole foods, gives a plethora of non-toxic options in aiding to neutralizing your stink. This is one of my favorites!

This is the most important switch to make right now! If you do nothing else, change your deodorant!! Ultimately, if you are suffering from putrid body odor, you must realize that the only way to resolve this issue is through your diet. Eliminate processed, refined foods, eat only organic meats and dairy and your body will thank you! You may even find that you don’t even need deodorant once you clean up your diet!

How To Jump Start Your Day

If you are coffee lover then sit back while I rock your world. Charlie and I have been learning so much about the importance of regularly consuming “good fat” in your diet. As a matter of fact, we eat a generous amount of healthy fat daily. Avocados, almonds & cashews, coconut oil, and raw butter & milk. There has been a huge misconception that fat, like in butter, is bad for you and will cause you to gain weight and clog your arteries. This is simply not true and there is “very little evidence to support the contention that a diet low in cholesterol and saturated fat actually reduces death from heart disease or in any way increases one’s life span.” I highly encourage you to read this article by Dr. Axe on The Truth About Saturated Fat.

Charlie and I are a testament that good fat burns fat! We have been consuming good fat on a daily basis for a year and we are still shedding pounds! One of the ways that Charlie get’s his good fat in is by putting raw butter in his coffee!


He had learned that by putting raw butter (best) or organic grass-fed butter in your coffee that it would give you a swift kick in the pants of energy, focus and alertness. He decided to put this theory to test a few weeks ago and let me just say the dude is in love! While the combo may seem gross, the taste is certainly not. In fact, once the butter melts it looks like a creamy latte.


Since Charlie has been doing the butter + coffee combo what he notices most has been:

  • Incredible alertness after just 1 cup of coffee. Which is something he might get after 2-3 cups, in turn has helped him drink much less in the morning.
  • He also noticed the alertness was consistent throughout the day without a crash mid morning
  • He loves the taste and is thoroughly enjoying the health benefits


Other benefits of coffee + raw butter or grass fed butter are:

  • Grass-fed butter has the best ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids (which reduces body fat) and is a good source of vitamin K
  • It provides healthy fats for your brain and body to create cell walls (membranes) and hormones.
  • Drinking it each morning puts your body in the routine to burn fat all day, helping you trim down overall. (YAY!)
  • gives you energy as well as increase cognitive function that you can literally feel when it kicks in for about six hours- and without the crash.


Another awesome way to receive the good fat benefit is to also add organic coconut oil to your coffee. By adding coconut it really rev’s up your drink and produce ketones, which are created when your body creates energy from fat rather than carbohydrates.

The butter you use MUST be organic grass fed (Kerrygold Irish Butter is a great choice and easy to find in grocery stores) or even BETTER Raw Butter (research online for local farmers to purchase raw butter)! The reason for this is Most cows are corn or soy fed. It’s cheap and filling, but cows aren’t actually meant to eat that! They can’t even digest it properly and their milk produces the kinds of fats you don’t want in your body.


Here’s the recipe for your Superman Java:

  • High quality coffee (unless you enjoy a daily dose of pesticides in your morning cup, stick to organic coffee)
  • 1-2 teaspoons of raw butter or grass fed butter (look for kerrygold irish butter)
  • Optional but certainly recommended 1 teaspoon of coconut oil
  • Need a sweet kick? Add a few drop of Stevia Extract or organic vanilla

Mix with a spoon or blend all ingredients in a food processor and ENJOY!
